SPACE Camp: A Parenting Group for Parents of Anxious Kids

“SPACE Camp” has been rebranded as our group for parents of anxious kids. Click here to visit that page.

The information below still applies.

Parents of anxious children reach out to us every day, wanting to learn more about Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE). So we’ve created SPACE camp: a chance for parents to learn the SPACE approach, in a 7 session online group with other parents. For more about the SPACE approach click here.

Break free of child anxiety.

Child anxiety rules the roost. You stop going to new places. Serving new foods. Or sleeping in your own bed. It’s exhausting. When did this little person start having so much power over your life?!

It’s painful, too. You see your child struggling, and feel powerless to help. You try forcing or begging them to do everyday things, while they fight you with all their might.

There IS another way. SPACE parenting limits anxiety’s power, and gets you closer to the family life you’d like to have. You’ll feel better about your parenting. And your anxious kids will feel better about themselves.

You’re not alone. Meet other Maryland families living with child anxiety.

Groups like SPACE camp enable parents with similar experiences to connect with and learn from one another. SPACE camp is limited to 6 families at a time, so that you can get your questions answered. That’s right, we said families. We encourage you to come to SPACE camp with your parenting partner(s).

We also said Maryland. You can attend SPACE Camp online from out of state, but our follow up services and options for insurance reimbursement are only available in Maryland.

Get ready to launch your family into S.P.A.C.E.

You’ve been living with your child’s anxiety for a long time. And you’re trying the SPACE approach because you need a path forward. You are READY to see change in your child. SPACE will get you ready to create that change.

The SPACE approach is most successful when parents take the time to understand the process well. The first several sessions of SPACE are about learning core concepts, practicing skills, and planning to start SPACE parenting at home. During these first few sessions you will start using supportive statements with your child, and may even see some changes occur.

The implementation of the SPACE approach in parenting your child begins after that, typically around session 4. At this point you’ll understand exactly what’s required to use SPACE with your child. You’ll meet one on one with your own SPACE therapist (included in the SPACE camp price), and plan exactly how to implement SPACE with your child.

After camp, continue your journey into SPACE with one of our SPACE trained therapists

Our therapists have been trained directly by the experts at the Yale Child Study Center, where SPACE was developed. If you’d like more individual/family support after SPACE Camp, we’re here to help. Just let us know that you’d like to be assigned to a therapist for additional SPACE work.

SPACE Camp FAQs

Is this program for my child’s anxiety, or for mine?

Successful SPACE treatment results in changes to your child’s anxiety. The surprising part of SPACE is that you, the parent, will be the one coming to SPACE camp and meeting with a therapist. But it isn’t treatment for you.

It’s treatment for your child, delivered through the parent-child relationship. Any improvement in your own mental health is just a bonus.

Can we do SPACE camp together as a couple/household/family?

YES! In fact, we encourage all adult caregivers to participate. It’s helpful to have all parents learn the skills together. Siblings are not part of the SPACE treatment.

SPACE isn’t couples therapy or family therapy. It isn’t designed to solve problems between you. We’ll cover handling disagreements briefly in SPACE camp, but we recommend working on these issues with your assigned therapist as well.

Will my child come to SPACE camp?

No. SPACE treatment is done with parents, and does not require the child to meet with a therapist.

However, if you plan to seek insurance reimbursement for SPACE treatment, you or your child would need to have an individual diagnostic assessment (usually 2 sessions) with the therapist first. Please let us know right away if you’d like to do this. Diagnostic assessments are not included in the SPACE camp price, and are only available in Maryland. Reimbursement amounts depend on your policy’s out of network benefits.
